If Gerry Burke is grateful for one thing about his impoverished childhood, it’s that he was born in Montreal—a place with a world-class university that allowed him to leverage his intellectual abilities into a ticket to another world.
Rising above humble beginnings, overcoming venomous anti-Semitism, and achieving far more than what he—or anyone else—ever expected, Burke climbs from the ghetto to a prestigious position in academic medicine.
As chairman of the Department of Medicine at Chicago's Cook County Hospital, one of the largest public sector teaching hospitals in the United States, Burke stands at the pinnacle of a world he never knew existed.
A pioneer in the then-emerging field of nuclear medicine, a skillful leader, and a born teacher, Burke’s career has allowed him to positively impact the lives of thousands of physicians.
It Was Worth the Trip chronicles the path Burke takes to reach the top—and what he learns about himself and his life's purpose. With great wisdom and insight—about the nature of life, success, and even our health-care system today—Gerry Burke shares the lessons he’s learned along the way.
It Was Worth the Trip The Memoir of a Physician/Teacher eBook Gerry Burke
First and foremost I want to say I am blessed enough to know the author from my everyday life. Lucky for me, Dr. Gerry Burke graces me with his presence on a daily basis where I work at his gym. "It Was Worth The Trip" is a gripping tale of ups and downs, adversities and achievements, suffering and joy and to my utter amazement, a true story. This memoir is more than just a book about a doctor, it's an inspiring written account of a truly remarkable man. I don't want to spoil the book but I am so happy to have someone like Gerry in my life to look up to. I would say that the most important thing I took away from his book is that it doesn't matter where we came from, only where we are going. Things can be bad, really really really bad, but that doesn't have to shape who we are, on the contrary I find that when things get bad, it's how we handle those issues that define us as a person. Not to say Gerry is a saint, he didn't get to where he is now without ruffling some feathers... ok many feathers. haha. Dr. Burke took the cards he was dealt and built a beautiful life of achievements. This is a MUST READ, especially for those of you who feel life gave you the short end of the stick. His story will captivate you and if you are anything like me, move you to tears on more than one occasion. Thank you for sharing your life story with the world Ger Bear, I for one am so very grateful to have such a living legend in my life and to be able to call you my friend means more than you will ever know.Product details

It Was Worth the Trip The Memoir of a Physician/Teacher eBook Gerry Burke Reviews
Dr. Burke tells an interesting tale, part autobiography and part history of how medical care and public health have evolved over the past half-century. The reader gets a very clear picture of the kind of politics and infighting that characterize professional life in a large hospital or public health system. “It Was Worth the Trip” is a good read and will be of particular interest to those who know or live in Chicago.
An easy to read, unique stand point into what goes on behind the scenes at a research hospital; "It Was Worth the Trip" compelled me from beginning to end. Personal touches added a greater sense of depth for Dr. Burke and how he navigated the water from an impoverished childhood to a well respected and successful teacher.
This book is superb, as a description of the systems of organization in hospitals, the efforts to improve them, and the resistance of entrenched bureaucracies to any change. The author's efforts to make the world better were prodigious and idealistic, and his teaching methods worth emulating, if anyone can do so! One feels deeply his personal journey. Unforgettable.
